M2021-E1, Malfunction in the engine cooling system of ferry PROSTIVIK 1 in the vicinity of the berth of Retais, Korppoo, on 17 March 2021

The ferry PROSTVIK 1 operated by Finferries lost manoeuvrability and collided with breakwater while approaching the berth in Retais, Korppoo, on 17 March 2021. The loss of manoeuvrability was caused by a malfunction that had occurred in connection with maintenance of the ferry’s engine cooling system. After collision the ferry was adrift until the tugboat VILMA, which was in the vicinity, got it in tow. The ferry's propulsion system was repaired during towing, and the ferry was able to proceed to shore under its own power and unload cargo of roughly 15 vehicles.

After unloading, the PROSTVIK 1 moved to a nearby dockyard, where the damage caused by the collision was inspected and the ferry’s propulsion and steering systems were tested. The ferry returned to normal traffic the next day. The incident did not cause any personal injuries or environmental damage. The ferry NAGU 2 replaced PROSTVIK 1 during the interruption of traffic.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the assessment was made that there is no need for an actual investigation.
