Airliner Evacuation due to Smoke in the Cockpit at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport on 30 June, 2020

The Safety Investigation Authority has completed a preliminary safety investigation on an incident and evacuation involving an airliner at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport on 30 June 2020. The incident occurred when, after landing, thick smoke began to billow into the cockpit. The captain stopped the aircraft on the taxiway and the passengers were safely evacuated from it. The occurrence did not result in injuries to persons nor significant interruption to Helsinki-Vantaa’s operations, owing to slow traffic.

The investigation determined that a faulty relay in the propeller anti-icing system was the cause of the smoke.

On the basis of the results of the preliminary investigation the Safety Investigation Authority decided that the distinctive characteristics of this occurrence do not warrant a full safety investigation.
