C13/1998M General Cargo Vessel ms TRENDEN, Grounding off Rauma on 17.12.1998

Finnish general cargo vessel ms TRENDEN was sailing from Hamina to Rauma 17 December 1998 when she at 07:19 grounded on the Valkeakari fairway leading to Rauma. She is owned by Rederi Ab Engship.

The accident occured in a tight turn when the bridge was occupied by master, pilot and first mate. The visibility during the accident was good and wind SW about 10 m/s. The damage due to the grounding was minor. They were no leaks and all systems remained operational.

The accident was caused by slow turning which was due to rudder limit in the autopilot set at a too small value and by dividing the turn into two segments as it is marked on the chart however. A contributing factor is that the lay-out of Valkeakari fairway does not conform to the international recommendations for fairway dimensions and that piloting practise in Rauma is to use that fairway instead of the deeper Rihtniemi fairway also when piloting large vessels. Only the draught is limiting the size of the vessels using Valkeakari fairway and there is not limit for the ship length.
