Y2024-01 Hostel fire in Äkäslompolo that led to the death of three people on 13 February 2024

Under section 2, subsection 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011), the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland, will initiate an investigation into the fire that occurred in Äkäslompolo, Kolari, in the night of 13 February 2024.

It is likely that three people died in the hostel fire, while 31 were able to rescue themselves. Despite the efforts to extinguish the fire, the building was destroyed completely.
Fire chief Jaakko Niskala, M.Sc. (Admin), has been appointed as the Head of the Investigation Team, with Senior Safety Investigator Krista Lyyra and Eero Nyman, M.Sc. (Admin), as its members. Senior Safety Investigator Timo Naskali will serve as the Investigator-in-Charge.
