Safety Investigation Authority, Finland (SIAF) Investigates Apartment Block Facade Collapse in Kontula
The Safety Investigation Authority, Finland has initiated an investigation into an accident in which the thick rendered façade and the insulation slabs of an apartment block collapsed in Kontula on 30 July 2024.
The purpose of a safety investigation is to promote general safety, prevent accidents and incidents from recurring, and reduce losses resulting from accidents.
The Safety Investigation Authority started a site investigation the day following the incident. It was completed after the upper part of the wall had been shored up, allowing a closer examination of the collapsed part of the wall. An investigation group has now been appointed.
The investigation will focus on whether there is anything in the thick rendered insulated facades, its life cycle or the repair work that needs particular attention.
The investigation will also look at the critical elements of the current façade system work steps, etc. that have a wide impact on the durability of the structure.
"There are many different types of rendered surfaces and many different types of rendered insulated systems There are also many manufacturers. In this investigation, we are looking at one particular thick rendered façade system in question. The collapse of the rendered façade facade in the apartment building under investigation does not mean that the same problems apply to all plastered facades," stresses Timo Naskali, Investigator-in-Charge.
The Safety Investigation Authority’s investigations are always generalizations (drawing overall safety benefit from one incident). The investigation group will next examine the samples taken and the observations made of the structure during the site investigation. The investigative questions will also be refined.
The total duration of an accident investigation is about 6-12 months.
