R2023-02 Derailment of a freight train that occurred in Tampere on 30 November 2023.

Under section 2, subsection 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011), the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland, will initiate an investigation into the derailment of a freight train that occurred in Tampere on 30 November 2023.

In the accident, the locomotive and the bogie of the first wagon of the freight train T7121 on the way from Kouvola to Pori became derailed at the switch V171 to the north of the Tampere railway station.

The accident did not cause personal injuries, but the locomotive, one freight wagon and track equipment were damaged. In addition, the accident caused extensive hindrances to train traffic.

The investigation will determine the causes of the derailment as well as the factors in their background with regard to the track and the rolling stock.

Erkki Rajamäki, Master of Administrative Sciences, is appointed as the Head of the Investigation Team, with Timo Kivelä, Bachelor of Engineering, train driver Emmi Kirvesmäki, safety equipment expert Markku Korhonen as well as Safety Investigator Mikko Tikkanen as its members. Chief Rail Safety Investigator Lasse Laatta will be the Investigator-in-Charge.
