C1/1999M Passenger Ferry ms CINDERELLA, Fire on Car Deck Onboard on 20.5.1999

Passenger ferry CINDERELLA sailed from Muuga to Helsinki according to her time-table on 19th May 1999 at 23.00 hours. Onboard there were 1707 passengers and 178 crew members. On car deck there was a cargo of 15 semi-trailers, two vans and 18 trucks with trailers. After sailing out she stayed drifting in the Estonian coastal waters, according to her schedule.

During a routine safety watch round a deckhand noticed some smoke in the cargo deck at 00.20. Ship’s own fire fighting organisation extinguished the fire which was in a truck’s trailer. CINDERELLA arrived to Helsinki according the time-table.

The fire was only in the charcoal bags in the foremost part of the trailer. In the aft part of the trailer there was also two palletised units of safety matches. The cargo was damaged but no damage was caused to the truck nor to the vessel. The cause of the fire was that the cooling time of the charcoal after the production process had not been adequate. This led to a spontaneous combustion. The cargo had not been declared according to the IMDG Code and the unit was not marked with warning labels.
