C12/1999R Train crew member injured in shunting work at Lappeenranta, on August 12, 1999

On Thursday 12 August 1999 a train-crew member coupling railway cars on Lappeenranta marshalling yard was seriously injured having been stuck between the car couplers. The worker in question sustained contusions in the middle-body. Railway rolling stock suffered no damage.

The accident was a result of the worker failing to follow the relevant safety instructions. In fact he went to couple railway cars in movement, though one of the wagons to be coupled was equipped with an automatic coupler.

In view of a prevention of similar accidents the Accident Investigation Board of Finland recommends that in training programmes in railway yard safety even more stress be laid on adequate and correct work methods in railway rolling stock coupling tasks.
