Y2020-01 Fire at retirement property in Jyväskylä on 10 July 2020

The Safety Investigation Authority, Finland has decided to initiate an investigation under Section 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011) into a fire at a retirement property in Jyväskylä on 10 July 2020.

The fire started from a balcony of the block of flats and rapidly spread to the attic of the building and the adjoining lower roofs and further to the neighbouring block of flats. The property houses retirement homes as well as a serviced housing unit which was badly damaged, forcing the residents to move out of their homes.

The investigation team will be headed by Heikki Harri, safety investigator, and its other members are Kalevi Laakkonen, fire protection engineer; Ville-Petteri Pulkkinen, M.Sc. A.; Taneli Rasmus, structural fire safety specialist; and Timo Tähtinen, fire chief. Chief Safety Investigator Kai Valonen will serve as the Investigator-in-Charge.
