R2020-01 Level crossing accident at the Kulmala level crossing in Mänttä-Vilppula on 14 May 2020.
The Safety Investigation Authority of Finland has decided to initiate an investigation under Section 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011) into a level crossing accident that occurred at the Kulmala level crossing in Mänttä-Vilppula on 14 May 2020.
An agricultural tractor collided with the side of a rail bus en route to Jyväskylä from Tampere via Haapamäki. The rail bus caught fire as a result of the collision. In addition to the driver, three passengers were travelling on the rail bus. None of them was injured. The tractor driver was mildly injured in the accident. The rail bus was badly burnt in the accident and the tractor was damaged.
Kari Ylönen (Master of Social Sciences) has been appointed as the head of the investigation team, and superintendent (ret.) Erkki Rajamäki, Timo Koli (expert in engine driving), Mika Hatakka (PhD, Psychology) and Knut Lehtinen (fire investigation expert) as members. The Investigator-in-charge is Esko Värttiö, Chief Rail Safety Investigator.
