M2019-01 Running aground of M/S Skarven (FIN) to the west of Degerby on 12 April 2019

The Safety Investigation Authority of Finland has decided to initiate an investigation under Section 2 of the Safety Investigation Act (525/2011) into the running aground of M/S Skarven to the west of Degerby, Åland, on 12 April 2019.

The vessel was on its scheduled route, arriving from Svinö to Degerby, when it suddenly lost its manoeuvrability in a narrow strait, collided with a lateral mark and finally ran aground. There were 25 passengers and 6 crew members aboard the vessel. The passengers were evacuated after the vessel had run aground. No personal injuries were caused by the running aground. The side of the vessel was ruptured above the waterline at a length of around 9.5 metres. A minor amount of oil leaked into the sea from the vessel.

CEO of Emergency Services Department (ret.), Chief Fire and Environment Officer Jari Alanen has been appointed as the head of the investigation team and Captain Bengt Malmberg, Safety Manager Pia Broumand, Chief Engineer Tuomo Lindell and Maritime Search And Rescue Expert Matti Salokorpi have been appointed as members. Chief Safety Investigator Risto Haimila will serve as the Investigator-in-Charge.
